Choosing a Variety of Foods on a Budget

Do you ever find yourself fatigued with your current meal routine? Have you or a loved one ever experienced the realities of food insecurity, which is defined by the USDA as “having inconsistent access to adequate food because of limited financial and other resources?” If so, you are not alone as about 1 in 6 American families fall within this category.
What are Americans eating most of?
1. Top veggies: potatoes and tomatoes
2. Top fruits: apples and oranges
For many, It seems that incorporating variety into a food pattern may seem unattainable as it appears to require ample creativity, time, and money. However, there are many strategies and programs to support the consumption of a varied diet which not only offers increased meal satisfaction but also significant health benefits.
Specifically, consuming a variety and foods can help improve physical and mental health:
1. Prevention of heart disease
2. Prevention of diabetes mellitus
3. Prevention of some cancers
4. Decreased depressive symptoms
